Guidelines to Directory Submissions

Date Added: July 30, 2007 05:44:56 PM

When you are looking for directories, you need to try and find the ones that have link value. There are many low quality directories out there that will have little or no link value whatsoever and the higher quality directories have strict guidelines about what types of sites they will accept. Usually the older the directory, the better, as directories that are less then a year old will probably not be trusted by the search engines.

Google PageRank can be a good indicator but it is not the be all, end all. Do not submit to a directory just because of it, there are directories with no PageRank on category pages that have link value and there are ones with high PageRank on category pages with no link value.

When you are submitting to directories, always make sure that you use unique descriptions on each submission, lots of directories give you a page about your company and if all of your directory pages have the same content on they will be devalued. Many directories allow you to use search phrases in the links to your site, this is good and it will help you rank for your phrases but do not use the same phrase on every submission, use different variations of the different search phrases you are targeting for the most SEO benefit.

Follow these guidelines, start finding and submitting to directories and you are on your way to seeing an increase in your search engine rankings. If it is done right, submitting to directories is an excellent way to build links and increase your search engine rankings.
